Why do I have an Instagram account? Simply put, I want to prove that French is everywhere. Yes, French is everywhere. We live in Canada, we are bilingual, so all of our labels, official documents, some of our signs, etc. come in French versions and there is always an option for Français on most Canadian websites. When I say "French is everywhere" I am speaking of the cultural influences in art, fashion, food, architecture, and film...not just in French class or in Canada. When I was in Japan, I was surprised by how many French cafés there were and French-inspired shops. I even ate the best crêpes in Harajuku, Tokyo! Crêpes are an incredibly popular dessert in Japan. The name of the crêpes shop was "Marion Crêpes: Patisserie from Harajuku since 1976." Marion is a common French name for women and pâtisserie is French for pastry shop. As you can see from the slideshow below, the pâtisserie uses blue, white, and red...the colours of the French flag. "Vie de France" is a bakery and café franchise in Japan that I saw in almost every city I visited during my stay, but I didn't get the chance to try any of their pastries (which is probably a good thing!). In short, French culture is everywhere and for that reason, you are lucky to be learning about it! Perhaps unlucky for your stomach though if you've been staring at my photos of the crêpes! Anyone else craving some French desserts? |
