I finally had the chance to officially introduce myself to all the students I will be teaching French to this year at Hillcrest. It was a pleasure and I certainly look forward to the rest of the year en Français! For the first class, we discussed why we learned French and how vast the French language really is in the world. We learned, or were reminded, that Canada and France are not the only countries that speak French. In fact, most students were shocked to find out that there are over 50 countries that have groups of French speakers, or Francophones, including Vietnam and Haiti (to learn more, click Autour du Monde). Moreover, we don't just learn it because it's Canada's second official language. There are so many benefits to learning a second language (to learn more, click Why learn French?) The students also thought of French words that we use in the English language. Some of those words include déjà vu, bon appétit, bon voyage, encore, bouquet, fiancé, etc. While talking about making our French title pages, two classes brought up macarons, but some students were confused about the difference between a macaron and a macaroon. For that reason, I have included a picture displaying the differences (it's just to the left). The second class of the week was dedicated to reviewing and learning some of the important French words and phrases that will be used throughout the year. The grade 4s and 5s were also introduced (and some grade 6s re-introduced) to Club Mystère, a mystery series designed to teach French. Hugo and I are eager to solve the first mystery of the year! I hope you all are as well! Au revoir for now! - Mademoiselle Dy |
